Program Introduction

The Bioengineering Discipline of East China University of Science and Technology was originated from the first domestically established major of antibiotic manufacturing engineering in 1955. It was approved as a key discipline in Shanghai in 2000. As a characteristic national major in 2008 and the first domestic first-level doctoral program in bioengineering in China in 2015 and 2019, the major of bioengineering was selected into the first-class undergraduate construction plan of Ministry of Education. This discipline relies on national, provincial, and ministerial research bases such as the State Key Laboratory of Bioreactor Engineering, the National Engineering Research Center for Biotechnology (Shanghai), and the province-ministry co-constructed collaborative innovation center of biomanufacturing industry, with an outstanding mentor team 38 professors and 55 associate professors. This discipline adheres to four aspects, focuses on key scientific issues in bioengineering, carries out innovative research on the entire chain from basic to application, achieves breakthroughs in major key technologies in bioengineering, and serves the high-quality development of the biomanufacturing industry. This discipline has distinctive features, excellent scientific research conditions and teaching resources, and fruitful scientific research and significantly influences home and abroad.

Education Concept

This discipline aims to cultivate bioengineering talents who have good moral character, excellent research style, healthy body and mind, a strong sense of social responsibility, good communication skills, and innovative spirit.

Graduates should be proficient in the solid basic theoretical knowledge and systematic professional technical skills of the bioengineering discipline, have a deep understanding of the development direction of the discipline and the frontier of international technology, have excellent international academic exchanges and proficient reading ability, and be able to independently engage in biotechnology. The ability of scientific research and the ability to solve practical process and technical engineering problems in bioengineering can make innovative achievements recognized by peer experts in a certain field or direction of the discipline. The recipient of a doctorate in bioengineering engineering should be competent for teaching, scientific research, industrial technology research and development, and management of institutions of higher learning, scientific research institutes, and related enterprises and institutions.
