2022 ECUST Application Guide for International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship

For the purpose of satisfying the growing demand of Chinese language teachers for the international community and facilitating Chinese language education in other countries, the Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) has set up the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship(ICLTS), aiming at the cultivation of qualified overseas Chinese language teachers. Confucius Institutes, independently operated Confucius Classrooms, certain HSK test centers, Chinese language (education) departments of foreign universities, professional associations for Chinese language instruction of other countries, Chinese embassies (consulates) abroad (collectively “recommending institutions”) may recommend outstanding students and currently-employed Chinese language teachers to study Chinese Language at Chinese universities.

Located in Shanghai, East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST) was founded in 1952, ranking as one of the national key universities directly under the administration of China's Ministry of Education. The main campus is situated in downtown Xuhui District and enjoys the convenient public traffic, which can be reached by Metro Line 15. ECUST has been enrolling and cultivating international students since 1956. As one of the official HSK test centers in China, and one of the host institutions for the recipient of the ICLTS, it establishes Chinese language courses available for international students all year round.

The applications to ECUST in particular for such a scholarship should follow the guidelines below:

I. ELIGIBILITY

All applicants shall be:

a)Non-Chinese citizens;

b)Should be friendly to China, have no criminal record, and abide by the laws and regulations of the Chinese government and the rules and regulations of the  university;

c)In good physical and mental conditions, and with good academic performance and conduct;

d)Aspiring to work in the Chinese language education and related fields;

e)Aged between 18 and 35 (as of September 1st, 2022), with the special allowance for the age limit of 45 for applicants currently working as Chinese language teachers

II. SCHOLARSHIP TYPES AND QUALIFICATIONS

Type A: Chinese Language Program

a)  Scholarship for One-Academic-Year Study (Chinese Language Study)

  • The program commences in September 2022, and provides scholarship for a maximum of eleven months.
  • International students currently studying in China are not eligible.
  • Applicants with a score of or above 210 on the HSK test (Level 3) and an HSKK test score shall acquire priority of admission.

b)  Scholarship for One-Semester Study

  • The program commences either in September 2022 or March 2023, and provides scholarship of maximum 5 months.
  • Applicants holding visas X1 or X2 are not eligible.
  • Applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 on the HSK test (Level 3), and an HSKK test score is required.

c)    Scholarship for Four-Week Study

  • The program commences either in July or December 2021, and provides a four-week scholarship.
  • Applicants holding the X1 or X2 visas are not eligible.
  • An HSK test score is required.
  • The organization and registration of the participants (with 10-15 participants per group)are required to be in the charge of a recommending institution to settle down the training schedule with the university in advance and to get approved by CLEC. If the group forms one class on its own, commencement date can be negotiated.

Type B: Online Chinese Language Program

a)  Scholarship for One-Academic-Year Chinese Language Online Study

  • The program commences either in September or March every year.
  • Applicants shall have a minimum score of 180 on the HSK test (Level 3), and an HSKK test score shall acquire priority of admission.

b)  Scholarship for One-Semester Chinese Language Online Study

  • The program commences either in September or March every year.
  • An HSK test score is required (no specific requirements for level and score).

c)  Special online training program

  • For the program’s details, please pay attention to our college website.

III. COVERAGE AND CRITERIA

The scholarship provides full coverage on tuition fee, accommodation fee, living allowance (four-week study students are excluded) and comprehensive medical insurance expenses.

a)    Tuition fees (Online program only provided tuition fee)

b)    Accommodation fee: Free dormitory is provided for scholarship recipient; upon the application of scholarship students and the approval of our university, those who choose off-campus dormitory will be paid by the university on a monthly or quarterly basis, with a standard of 700RMB/month.

c)    Living allowance: Issued monthly. The standard for one-year and one-semester research students is 2,500 RMB/month.

  • Scholarship students should register at the time specified in the admission notice of our university, otherwise they will be disqualified for the scholarship. Students who are enrolled before the 15th (or on the 15th) of the month are entitled to the full allowance of that month while those who enroll after the 15th of that month are entitled to half of the amount.
  • During the study period, for any student who is absent from China due to personal reasons for more than 15 days (excluding winter and summer holidays), the allowance during absence will be suspended.
  • For students who suspend study or drop out of school for personal reasons, or who are given disciplinary punishment by the host institutions, allowance will be terminated on the date of such suspension, dropping out or when the decision of such punishment is announced.
  • The living allowance for the month of graduation will be granted half a month after the date of graduation or expiration day of the study confirmed by host institutions.

d)    The comprehensive medical insurance premium shall be purchased by our university in accordance with the relevant regulations of the Chinese Ministry of Education to study in China. The standard for four-week research students is 160 RMB/person, the one-semester research student is 400 RMB/person, and the standard for more than one academic year is 800 RMB/year/person.

IV. APPLICATION PROCEDURES AND APPLICATION DEADLINE

From March 1, 2022, applicants should log on to the International Chinese Teacher Scholarship Application Website (http://cis.chinese.cn) to apply, and at the same time log on to the East China University of Science and Technology International Student Online Application Website (http://apply.ecust.edu.cn) to register and apply online, and upload the application form for the International Chinese Teacher Scholarship as proof of payment of the application fee (the application process on this website is the same as that of the long-term self-funded Chinese language study program).

a)    Please log on to search for recommending institutions and host institutions, choose ECUST as your first choice;

b)    Submit application materials online, pay attention to the application process, review comments and scholarship review results;

c)    Scholarship recipients confirm with our university to go through the formalities for studying in China, and print the award certificate online;

d)    Enroll at the time specified in the admission notice of our university.

Application Deadline (Beijing time)

a)    April 15th, for those commencing in July

b)    May 15th, for those commencing in September

c)     September 15th , for those commencing in December

d)     November 15th , for those commencing in March 2023

V.    APPLICATION DOCUMENTS

a)    A scanned copy of passport photo page;

b)    A scanned copy of score reports of the HSK and HSKK tests (within the two-year validity);

c)    A reference letter by the head of the recommending institutions.

d)    Applicants currently working as Chinese language teachers shall provide proof of employment as well as a reference letter by the employer.

e)    Applicants under the age of 18 must submit a certificate of entrustment signed by their guardian in China

Currently employed Chinese language teachers applying for the scholarships can be exempted from submitting Chinese Language Proficiency Test (HSK) certificates if they can provide proof of employment and a letter of recommendation from the institution where they work.

Chinese Bridge winners who have been awarded the 2022 International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship Certificate shall log onto the International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship website and submit documents to relevant host institutions upon presentation of their scholarship certificates. VI. OTHERS

a)    For relevant professional training programs and teaching courses, please consult East China University of Science and Technology.

b)    Applicants shall be familiar with the specific criteria and deadlines for registration, and submit necessary documents according to specific requirements, and please pay attention to the email notification;

c)    During the COVID-19 epidemic, please contact ECUST in time for related admissions and other matters;

d)    Students who fail to pass the pre-enrollment medical examination, withdraw from university midway, or fail to report to university or suspend their studies without permission will be disqualified for scholarship.
